Luckily for us the Japanese seem to like to build tunnels, and therefore we haven't needed to climb all the way up on each hill that we've encountered on the coastline. On the island of Kyushu we rode through 16 tunnels is one day (or 17 or 18, we kind of lost count after 10) but our favorite this far was the Kanmon tunnel linking Kyushu to Honshu. We descended 60 meters with an elevator and walked underwater from island to island trying to avoid thinking about the huge masses of water above.
