A roadside gem

This amazing small shrine in Fukaura is one of those gems you'll only find on a cycling trip (OK, this also applies for long-distance walking and rollerblading but you get my point). In a car or train you'd doze off for a minute, or look the other way, and never notice that someone has not only built a shrine on one of the sharp rocks poking up from the sea, but a concrete passage that enables you to walk out to a much bigger rock and climb on top of it and get totally blown away by the view.

The steps carved inside the big rock were wet and kind of uneven, but having to crawl on all fours made it just more exciting for Kaisa who had initially been hesitant to stop due to not having had breakfast yet. (Those who have traveled and/or lived with Kaisa know that breakfast is a very big deal for her.)

We also can't get over how clear the sea water here is! We're used to the murky waters of our beloved but badly polluted Baltic Sea, and keep stopping and admiring the way you can see every stone and grain of sand at the bottom of the sea, even at busy harbors.
