We've seen plenty of temples by the road, the statues usually covered in moss and beautifully aged, and the gardens quiet and empty. But the Shimoniseki shrine was a different story: bright red and gold ornaments, a large souvenir (or relic?) shop, a priest playing a flute by the altar.
The shrine was set up nearly 1000 years ago in the honor of an 8-year-old emperor who drowned himself in the sea after losing an important samurai battle. A tragic death, but his memory lives on in quite impressive surroundings!
