5 tips for wild camping in Japan

1. Try to find a big enough city so that it'll have a park. Public parks are amazingly quiet at night, have toilets and are perfect for wild camping. Another favorite of ours is sports fields, where you might also get a shower. 2. Get out early. It gets light at before 5 AM and soon after that the first people will appear in the park, exercising and walking around. You'll want to get out of the tent at around 6 AM not to raise too much attention - unless it's raining hard which means less people in the park and more sleep for you! 3. Don't freak out if someone sees you. In Europe we always try to find a secret spot for wild camping but here it's not an issue. As long as you're out of the way, the park users will only find you amusing and maybe a bit weird. 4. Be nice to people. Say good morning, tell them where you're from and what you're doing (we have small flyers in Japanese which people have really appreciated here) and try to chat with people even if you don't really have a common language. 5. You might get happily surprised. While wild camping here, we've been offered water, fruit and breakfast, two cans of beer, a car to sleep in and a bathroom to wash ourselves in.
